Rio+20 countdown begins in Maldives; President Waheed invited to the 16th NAM summit to be held in Tehran; Former President Nasheed attends meeting of the International Democrat Union (IDU) in Wellington

    Reports noted that in the run up to Rio+20, the Maldives Government has unveiled a series of events to highlight the major summit on sustainable development. The Government has announced a number of events which focus on the seven themes of Rio; jobs, energy, cities, food, water, oceans and disasters. 1

    In another development, President Dr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran has invited President Dr Mohamed Waheed to the 16th Non Aligned Movement Summit, to be held in Tehran from August 30-31, 2012. The letter of invitation was presented to President Waheed by a Special Envoy from the Iranian President, Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Asia and Pacific, Dr Seyed Abbas Araghchi. 2

    In other developments, according to reports, former President Mohamed Nasheed has arrived back in the Maldives after attending a meeting of the International Democrat Union (IDU) in Wellington, New Zealand. According to a statement from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), during the meeting Nasheed explained the political situation in the Maldives and how the deadlock could be resolved. Nasheed also had meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand Murray McCully. 3
