Maldives appeals the United Nations for help in building its defenses against rising sea levels; Maldives becomes the 183rd member state of the ILO

  • Maldives has appealed to the United Nations space agency to help it build its defenses against rising sea levels. In a recent statement, the Environment Minister Abdulla Shahid pointed out that Maldives had to relocate the populations of two of its 200 islands because of eroding beaches1. Meanwhile, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Frank La Rue, has applauded the Maldivian government on steps taken towards strengthen press freedom2.

    In other developments, Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, is on a diplomatic visit to the United States. Dr Waheed would be participating at a UN General Assembly meeting on renewable energy3. Maldives has now become the 183rd member state of the International Labour Organization. The population of Maldives is 299,000, of whom some 81,000 are migrant workers. The major generators of income and employment are tourism and fishing4.
