  • According to reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will be visiting Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico from May 31 to June 6. He will then visit the United States from June 7 to 8 and meet US President Barack Obama. 1

    According to reports, on May 20, during his visit to India which was the first foreign trip by him since assuming office, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that China is ready to work with India to promote exchanges between the two countries’ parliaments and political parties so as to further consolidate bilateral relations. 2 He further added that the most important outcome of his talks with Indian leaders is that they reached strategic consensus and deepened strategic trust. 3
    In other developments, reports noted that Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon arrived in Beijing on May 19, 2013 starting his China visit. During his visit he is scheduled to meet Xi Jinping and other top Chinese legislators. 4
    In other developments, reports noted that China has been granted observer status in the Arctic Council. Even though this does not allow China to have a vote it does help give legitimacy to Chinese activities in the region. 5
    According to reports, the Chinese government on May 14 released a white paper detailing the progress made in human rights in 2012, stressing its achievements in improving living standards and increasing room for citizens to express their opinions. 6
