UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs visits Bangladesh; Dipu Moni meets Ban Ki –moon

  • According to reports, five member delegation led by UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernández-Taranco visited Bangladesh on May 10. During their visit, the delegation met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, three-member team from the Jamaat-e-Islami and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam.1

    In another development, according to reports, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his call to all major political parties in Bangladesh to engage in a dialogue for creating a congenial atmosphere to hold credible polls as scheduled. He expressed his optimism over Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s offer of dialogue with the opposition on the modalities for an interim government to oversee the next general election. The UN chief made the call during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dipu Moni at his office in New York on May 13. Dipu Moni attended the UN high-level meeting on the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons which was held in New York on May 13-14. 2
