  • According to reports, the ruling Awami League on May 5, rejected opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s 48-hour ultimatum to meet the demand for restoring the non-party caretaker government system. It again urged Khaleda to respond to the prime minister’s call for talks to reach a consensus on holding the next polls. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Bangladesh Garment makers on May 5, proposed forming a wage board to review the wages of workers as the European Union warned of suspending preferential trade access for Bangladesh if it did not take immediate steps to improve labour standards. 2

    In other developments, according to reports, International Crimes Tribunal-2 has found Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, one of the key organisers of the infamous Al Badr force, guilty of committing crimes against humanity during the liberation war and has sentenced him to death. The 61-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami senior assistant secretary general was found guilty of mass killing, murder, abduction, torture, rape, persecution, and abetment of torture in greater Mymensingh district in 1971. 3
