  • In the light of the prevailing situation in the border area between Sudan and South Sudan, the UN Security Council called on the two countries to end hostilities and resume negotiations to resolve all outstanding issues. The Council also said it intends to use ‘appropriate measures’ if parties do not comply. 1

Meanwhile, at the 8th round of Intergovernmental Negotiations on UNSC reform, India’s representative to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri said that the Council’s working methods need to be improved to reflect the changing times and should concentrate on international peace and security and not encroach upon the mandate of the General Assembly. He made a case for the participation of non-members in the subordinate organs of the UNSC. The participation of troop and police contributing countries in decision-making of peacekeeping operations was also suggested. 2

In other developments, while stressing on a greater international cooperation to tackle terrorism, India urged for an early adoption of the long-pending Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. 3
