India calls for concise working document on UNSC reforms; UN welcomes ‘landmark’ agreement between Kosovo and Serbia; India’s growth rate for 2013 projected at 6.4%; UN to assess violence against women in India

  • According to reports, at the 9th Round of Intergovernmental Negotiations on the question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council, India’s new permanent representative to the UN Asoke Kumar Mukerji highlighted the need for expansion of the UN Security Council calling the current Council structure an “unnatural situation of stagnation” in a dynamic and rapidly changing international environment. He also called for a ‘concise working document’ that would help kick-start negotiations. 1

    Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon welcomed a “landmark” agreement between Serbia and Kosovo in the context of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue facilitated by the European Union. He also expressed the hope that the agreement would bring about a bright future and lasting stability to the region. 2

    In other developments, a UN report has predicted that the Indian economy is likely to grow at 6.4 per cent in 2013 which will be higher than the 6 per cent expansion in the economies of the developing Asia-Pacific economies in the same period. 3

    According to reports, the UN will send a special rapporteur to India to asses violence committed against women. The rapporteur is likely to meet government authorities and civil society members in Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu among others. The findings and the recommendations will be presented before the UNHRC. 4
