  • US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke met South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and presidential foreign affairs and security aide Kim Sung-hwan in Seoul during the week. President Lee on his part assured Seoul’s active participation in international efforts to stabilize Pakistan and Afghanistan. Noting that Korean nationals were killed in an al-Qaeda attack in Yemen in March 2009, Mr. Lee pointed out that no country in the world was safe from terrorism.

Reports noted that South Korea's first satellite-carrying rocket, to be launched in late July, may fly over Japanese territorial waters off the southwestern island of Kyushu and the southern Okinawa group of islands1. The North Korean ‘satellite’ launch earlier in the month had generated a huge controversy and led to the imposition of sanctions against Pyongyang.

South Korea meanwhile accepted Pyongyang’s offer to discuss the increasing tensions between the two countries at the Kaesong Industrial Complex. Representatives from both sides will meet on April 212.
