  • According to reports, the UN General Assembly approved a global arms trade treaty that regulated the international trade in conventional arms. Though the treaty failed to garner unanimous support, it received 154 votes in its favour. The adoption of the treaty was welcomed as a “historic diplomatic achievement by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Three countries including Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran and Syria voted against the resolution while India was among the 23 countries that abstained. 1 India’s abstention was in protest of the draft which it described as a instrument in the hands of weapons exporting countries. It had also stressed consistently that the treaty should make a real impact on illicit trafficking in conventional arms and that it should ensure balance of obligations between exporting and importing states. 2
