  • Violence erupted between the Iraqi Army and members of the Sunni Awakening Council in central Baghdad area of Fadel following the arrest of Adel Mashhadani, a local chief of the Sahwa or Awakening Council, on charges of murder and extortion. Iraqi officials later stated that the area was under the control of the army and that the Iraqi Army “will no longer give the Sahwa any powers in Fadel1.”

In other developments, seven people, including four police officers, were killed when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden truck into the compound of a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which has become a flashpoint for ethno-sectarian conflict. While a majority of the population is Sunni Arabs, Mosul had been run by a Kurdish minority government until provincial elections earlier in the year restored the political clout of the Sunni community2.
