  • Army Chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor in an interview to CNN-IBN on February 23 noted that although infiltration of militants from across the Line of Control in J and K was on decline, the number of attempts had gone up in the recent past. General Kapoor also expressed concern about the use of the Army to handle internal insurgencies and communal disturbances, stating that it undermined the deterrence effect of the troops. He called for the Army to be used only “as a last resort and for a minimal period."

Speaking on China, General Kapoor noted that the so-called ‘string of pearls’ may not necessarily be seen as an attempt to encircle India. He however noted the Chinese military build-up and admitted that there were incursions into China from the Indian side as well1.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that nearly 3000 youths from different parts of J and K were undergoing training in various terrorist camps in the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir2.

Elsewhere, a CRPF personal, Mudasir Yusuf, was arrested from Pulwama on February 20 for allegedly carrying hand grenades and IEDs for terrorists operating in the Kashmir Valley. He is suspected to have links with the Hizbul Mujahideen3.
