Bangladesh Army Chief visits India; AL urges government to lift emergency by March 2008

  • Gen. Moeen U Ahmed started a six-day visit to India on February 24 becoming the first Bangladesh army chief to visit India. Border security among other issues will be discussed during his visit seen an attempt to boost military-to-military ties between the two neighbours1. Bangladesh Rifles on its part reported that the BSF had shot dead 5 Bangladeshi traders during the week at various places on the border2.

    In domestic developments, a Dhaka court rejected the bail petition of former premier Khaleda Zia on February 20 even as the Awami League (AL) urged the caretaker government to lift the emergency by March 2008 and also announce the date for the parliamentary elections3.

    In other developments, a 125-member contingent of Bangladesh police left for Congo on February 22 to join the UN peacekeeping mission in Monuc4.
