  • In Manipur, as many as six United National Liberation Front (UNLF) cadres were killed in an encounter with the security forces along the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district on February 23. This was one of the major successes achieved by the security forces after the flush-out operation in Somtal in Chandel district1.

Meanwhile, National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan, speaking at Kohima on February 18, admitted that the Naga peace process had slowed down. He stated that the parleys could only move forward if the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) agreed to accept a solution within the Constitution’s broad parameters2.
