  • The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is promoting through its 'Bio-Power' strategy the ‘smart crop’ for bio-fuels production - Sweet sorghum or Jowar. Among its advantages being touted include the crop being used as both a food and a fuel source, its ability to grow in drier regions and tolerant to heat and drought. The crop was also stated to be carbon neutral as one hectare of sweet sorghum absorbs and emits about 45 tonnes of carbon1.
