  • Reports noted that Israel has issued a demand to the Palestinian Authority to stem a spike in anti-Israel protests in the West Bank. The protests are in support of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and against settlement expansion in occupied territories. Earlier last week, a Palestinian prisoner died in custody in an Israeli prison; according to a PA official, the man died after being tortured, while Israeli prison officials say he suffered cardiac arrest. The Israeli media have linked the surge in protests and Israeli concerns about it to the planned visit by US President Barack Obama to the region next month. As an apparent incentive, Israel has allowed transfer of around US$100 million in tax revenues to the PA, which had earlier been withheld. A senior PA official has indicated that the PA holds Israel responsible for any escalation in violence, and that the PA is unlikely to issue any call for calm in the West Bank. 1
