  • According to reports, unknown persons hurled a grenade at Khanyar police station in old city. According to Superintendent of Police North, Showkat Shah the device was hurled towards the police station but it exploded with a bang near the gate. However, no one was injured in the attack. This is the first attack on police in Srinagar city this year. 1

    In another development, according to reports, faced with strong opposition from non-Congress Chief Ministers over setting up of an anti-terror body, the Centre reached out to the states saying security of the country is a shared responsibility and without coordination among States the war against terror cannot be won. Inaugurating an NSG hub in Badu, about 50 kms from Kolkata, Home Minister P Chidambaram said the Constitution assigns law and order to the State government and also to the Centre to protect the country against external aggression or internal disturbance. 2

    Reports noted that while Jammu and Kashmir Government has maintained conspicuous silence over the proposed setting of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the political parties of the state have joined chorus against the formation of the powerful “anti-terror” agency with some legal experts saying that the agency will have also jurisdiction here as the Central Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)-1967 is also in force in the state. 3

    In other developments, according to reports, unidentified gunmen shot dead a youth in the Sopore town of north Kashmir. A police officer said the gunmen fired upon Umar Rasool Kaboo, 20, near Arampora. Kaboo was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The gunmen managed to escape after carrying out the attack. 4
