According to reports, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that his government has decided to resume peace talks with jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan. Erdogan was speaking to supporters in the town of Midyat which has a population comprising Kurds, Turks and Arabs. The goal of the talks with the PKK is to disarm the rebel group that has in the past used bases in neighbouring Iraq as a launch pad for attacks on Turkish security forces in the country’s southeast. PKK has been branded a terrorist group by Turkey and Ocalan has been serving a life sentence in a Turkish prison since 1999. The 30-year old conflict has killed over 40,000 people, mostly Kurds. 1
