Reports noted that Seoul has recently condemned Tokyo’s move to establish a new office to oversee territorial issues, including the Takeshima islands or Dokdo islands, administered by South Korea and claimed by Japan. The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced it as a regrettable behaviour that showed Tokyo’s inability to repent its history of imperialist invasions. Seoul also demanded Tokyo to immediately withdraw that plan. 1

In another development, during a security forum in Seoul, South Korean chief of naval staff Adm. Choi Yoon-hee vowed to bolster blue-water capabilities to deal with major maritime challenges from North Korea as well as overseas. It is worth noting that the Navy currently undertakes a supporting role in case of a peninsula contingency largely due to lack of naval assets though the Army and Air Force plays a pivotal role in any armed conflict. 2
