According to reports, with Pakistan’s total debt and liabilities now in excess of Rs15 trillion, the government on February 4 conceded to have breached major limits imposed by the parliament under the Fiscal Responsibility and Debt Limitation Act 2005 to check and bring down increasing debt levels deemed vulnerable to the nation’s sovereignty.1

Reports noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan has rejected the government’s plea for lifting a ban it had imposed on recruitment in all departments and on diversion of allocated developmental funds. However, it has exempted from the ban constitutional bodies, including the Supreme Court, high courts, parliament and the Federal Ombudsman. The decision was taken by the ECP at a meeting presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim here on February 6. 2
