According to reports, following boycott of national polls last month by the opposition Islamic Action Front, Jordan’s King Abdullah is calling for electoral reforms to make the country’s parliament more representative. The Islamic Action Front is the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing in Jordan and the country’s largest opposition party; it boycotted the polls saying the rules were skewed against areas where they hold most support. The king was speaking at the opening session of the 150-member assembly – the first to be elected since the beginning of the Arab Spring. Jordan’s political establishment has so far opposed the king’s efforts to grant more parliamentary seats to cities dominated by Jordanians of Palestinian origin, who comprise close to seven million of the country’s population, but do not enjoy the preferential access to government facilities that citizens of native descent do.1
