According to reports, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad has accused Israel of attempting to “destabilise” his country following a reported Israeli airstrike in Damascus on January 30. Syrian state television had reported that Israeli jets carried out the attack on a military research centre in the Jamraya area near Damascus. However, US officials have said that the strike targeted a weapons convoy that was bound for Lebanon. Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak has hinted that Israel was responsible, and that Syria should not be allowed to move advanced weapons systems into Lebanon. Israel has warned of the danger of chemical weapons from Syria falling into the hands of Lebanon’s Hezbollah. 1 Damascus has threatened to retaliate fuelling fears of a regional spill-over of the Syrian conflict. 2
