  • According to reports, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation & Nuclear Safety Katherina Reiche paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed on January 8, 2012. At meeting held at the President’s Office, President Nasheed and the Parliamentary State Secretary exchanged views on domestic and international political situations and ways to resolve the current political environment. 1

    In another development, President Mohamed Nasheed sent a message of sympathy to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III of Philippines and to President Dilma Rouseff of Brazil, following the loss of lives and devastation caused by heavy flooding and landslides in both countries. 2

    According to reports, the Maldives government lifted the nationwide ban on spas and massage parlors on January 4, 2012 revoking a circular sent by the Tourism Ministry the previous week which ordered spas to cease operations. 3

    In other develoepmts, reports noted that according to the cabinet decision made on January 3, 2012 Maldives will take part in the “United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime”. 4
