South Korea is set to join the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on January 1. After joining, Seoul is expected to take active role in ensuring the Security Council’s strong punitive action against North Korea due to Pyongyang’s recent long-rage rocket launch. 1

In a significant move, Pentagon reportedly informed the US Congress regarding its intention to sell to South Korea four Global Hawk surveillance ships worth $1.2 billion. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (affiliated with US Defense Department) seems to suggest that as Seoul is slated to assume primary responsibility for intelligence gathering from the US-led Combined forces Command in 2015, it will need such intelligence and surveillance capability. 2
