  • The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Pritviraj Chavan informed Rajya Sabha on December 9 that 11 of India's 17 nuclear power reactors were operating below optimum capacity due to a lack of sufficient supplies of indigenous uranium. Of the remaining six, three reactors use imported uranium and are operating at maximum capacity, while the remaining three are currently shut for long-term maintenance. Capacity utilization of nuclear power plants during April-November 2009 stood at 60 per cent, while nuclear power accounted for 2.9 per cent of the total 154 GW of power generated.1
