India, US and Sri Lanka congratulate the newly elected President of Maldives; The European Union urged parties Maldives to work together for future of their nation; Parliamentary election to be held on March 22, 2014

    Reports noted that Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Rajeev Shahare has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on November 18, 2013. At the meeting, high commissioner Shahare presented to President Yameen, a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and congratulated President Yameen on his assumption of office. 1

    According to reports, Dr Manmohan Singh in his letter to the President assured India's full support in his efforts to provide a peaceful and prosperous future for the people of Maldives. In a message, the Prime Minister described Yameen's election victory as "a triumph for the forces of democratic pluralism in the Maldives".2 In response to the congratulatory message of PM Singh, President Yameen has said maintaining a good relationship with India is a priority of the new government. President Yameen also invited Prime Minister Singh to an official visit to the Maldives at the earliest convenience to discuss issues of common interest.

    According to reports, in a message the United States’ government also congratulated President Yameen and assured to continue the existing cordial relationship with the new government. 3 Ambassador of the United States to the Maldives Michele J. Sison has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen. 4

    Reports noted that Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has extended his congratulations to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on his election victory. 5

    In other developments, according to reports, the European Union has said it expects all political parties in the Maldives to put aside personal and ideological rivalries and work together for future of the country. 6

    According to reports, Election Commission of Maldives has announced that the parliamentary election would be held on March 22, 2014. The current parliament was assembled on 28 May 2009 and will expire on 28 May 2014. 7
