  • According to reports, the UN Security Council commended the Liberians for holding a free, fair and transparent election. The Council called on all parties to comply with the Liberian constitution and to use legal channels to settle electoral disputes. It also encouraged the Liberian authorities to continue to work with the UN Mission in Liberia towards achieving progress on the transition of security responsibilities from the mission to national authorities. 1

    In another development, the UN Security Council, in an unanimous decision extended the European Union stabilization force (EUFOR) for another year in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 2

    Meanwhile, the members of the Security Council strongly condemned the attacks against embassies and consular premises in Syria and urged the authorities to protect diplomatic and consular property. 3 The 15-member Council also issued another condemnation against the attacks carried out by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) across Central Africa and demanded an immediate end to the atrocities. 4

    Among other issues discussed between India and Singapore during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the country, Singapore’s prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong also extended support to India’s permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council. 5

    In the interim, India was among the 40 countries that abstained from a UN resolution that condemned an alleged Iranian plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the US. India’s representative to the UN cited lack of facts and the matter being sub-judice as reasons for its abstention. 6

    In other developments, the UN General Assembly voted to reinstate Libya’s membership on the Human Rights Council following the new Libyan government’s pledge to defend human rights and establish rule of law. Libya had earlier been suspended from the Council as part of an international effort to stop Gadhafi’s violent crackdown on protestors. 7
