India and Sri Lanka held the first round of talks on comprehensive civil nuclear cooperation in New Delhi on October 11. Reportedly, it was agreed that the two sides would work towards a comprehensive agreement on bilateral civil nuclear cooperation. Discussions included, inter alia, training of officials, nuclear safety and response to nuclear accidents. 1
In another development, Sri Lankan foreign minister Gamini Lakshman Peiris left for Kuwait on October 13 to participate in the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) foreign ministerial meeting. 2
Meanwhile, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, Ms. Karin Hulshof met President Rajapaksa on October 12. During her meeting with the President, Ms Hulshof commended Sri Lankan government’s programs and efforts to uplift the welfare of rural communities. 3
In other developments, according to reports, the Sri Lankan government has lifted its travel ban issued to Sri Lankans visiting Tamil Nadu. 4
Sri Lanka is to open a consulate office of Sri Lanka in Melbourne Australia. The cabinet has approved establishing of the consulate general office. 5
