Gayoom: Mid-term election would be ‘crime’; Independent Anti-Corruption Commission established

  • While the Adhaalat party has accused President Gayoom of buying votes1 , the Commonwealth and the America government have termed the Maldivian elections free and fair 2. Meanwhile, Hassan Saeed is all set to from a political party called Maldives National Party (MNP), and it would back Nasheed’s MDP. Parliamentary elections in 2009, is the main agenda of the proposed MNP3 . Connected to this development was the announcement of Mohammad Nasheed of MDP for mid term elections4 .But, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has termed any plans towards mid-term election would as criminal. Gayoom has claimed that there is no specific provision in the constitution for mid-term elections, and elections should only be held within 60 days if both president and vice president resign5.

    Meanwhile, an Anti Corruption Commission has been established in Maldives. The members of the Commission are Abdul Raheem Abdul Rahman, Abdulla Adam, Abdulla Hilmy, Hassan Luthfy, and Ali Rasheed, who were appointed by the president after being approved by the parliament 6. The commission was established under the Anti-Corruption Act, passed by Parliament in September with 33 out 35 members in favour.
