  • Reports noted that Indian Chief of Army Staff General Bikram Singh paid a four-day goodwill visit to Bangladesh beginning from October 2 at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan. 1

    In another development, Bangladesh and India have expressed their concerns over the increasing trend of smuggling of synthetic and “party” drugs -- largely used by youngsters -- across the open border. To this end, both the countries have decided to share actionable intelligence and information regarding these drugs which are produced cheaply in laboratories and available easily under popular names like “Speed” and “Ecstasy”. The discussion took place in the two-day annual talks with India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). 2

    Foreign Minister Dipu Moni has been unanimously elected chairperson to the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) at its 38th Session held in New York. With the election, she has become the first female chair of CMAG. She has also become the first from a South Asian country to chair the Commonwealth body. 3

    In other developments, the Happy Planet Index 2012 has ranked Bangladesh 11th among 151 countries, ahead of both India and Pakistan, which ranked 32nd and 16th respectively. 4
