  • Maldives co-sponsored a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council for release of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The resolution calls upon the military junta in Myanmar to resort to dialogue and release all political prisoners so that democratic elections in 2010 can be held in a free and fair environment.1

The Press Secretary to the Maldivian President stated that the government had consulted with Arab countries, before making the decision to renew ties with Israel. He added that resumption of diplomatic relations with Israel did not signify an approval of its actions against the Palestinians.2
